Audio transcription help

Start with an audio file up to 25 MB; only the first 5 minutes are transcribed. One attempt is available every 24 hours, subject to daily availability. Upload it, review the transcript, name the speakers, and save the result.

Open the transcription tool

Upload an audio file

Choose Upload audio on the homepage. Common audio formats are supported, including MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, and OGG.

Keep the page open while the file uploads and the transcript is generated. Keep your original audio file, too.

Files can be up to 25 MB. Longer recordings are accepted, but only the first 5 minutes are transcribed. For a larger file, export a smaller audio copy or split it into smaller parts. Simply renaming the extension does not convert or compress a file.

Name the speakers

The transcript starts with labels such as “Speaker 1” and “Speaker 2.” Select a speaker’s name field, enter the name or role you want, and save the change.

A name applies to every part of the transcript assigned to that speaker. Use full names, first names, or labels such as “Host” and “Guest.”

Renaming a speaker does not correct a passage assigned to the wrong voice. Check the original audio and correct any mistaken attributions in your downloaded transcript. Automatic speaker labels are not proof of someone’s identity.

Copy or download your transcript

Use Copy transcript to place the text on your clipboard. Use Download transcript to choose a file format.

FormatBest for
Plain text — .txtReading, pasting into documents, and making simple corrections
Markdown — .mdNotes and documents in apps that support Markdown
JSON — .jsonWorking with the transcript in software or an automated workflow

The download menu lists all available formats. Review speaker names before exporting, and save the transcript before leaving the page.

Fix a problem

What happenedWhat to do
The file is over 25 MBCompress an audio copy or split the file into smaller parts. Keep the original unchanged.
The upload did not finishCheck your connection, confirm the file is within the limit, and try the upload again.
The file could not be processedPlay the original to check that it opens correctly. Export a fresh audio copy from the source app and try again.
The transcript is emptyCheck that the file contains audible speech, rather than silence or music alone.
Words are wrong or missingCompare the transcript with the original audio. Correct errors in the downloaded text, especially names and technical terms.
Speaker labels are wrongCheck the voice at each disputed passage. Renaming a label changes its name, not the passages assigned to it.
Copying does not workDownload a TXT file instead, then open it and copy the text from there.
The download did not appearCheck your browser’s download list and permissions, then try the download again while the transcript is still open.

Understand temporary uploads

Temporary audio uploads are deleted after processing. Hourly cleanup removes abandoned uploads older than one hour; service interruptions can delay deletion. The service is not a backup for your original files.

Download the transcript before leaving. Transcripts are stored in this browser. Download important transcripts before clearing browser data or changing devices. See our Privacy Policy for more information.
